The People
Timber and Tone Architects was founded on the belief that architecture is experienced with more than the eyes. The name draws from both the physical warmth of timber and the idea of timbre — the unique character that gives distinction to a voice, an instrument, or even a place. Tone speaks to atmosphere, emotion, acoustics, color, and the subtle qualities that shape the way we experience the world around us. For us, architecture is not simply about buildings. It is about resonance.
Ryan Boone is an architect, musician, educator, and recovering film producer who believes good design should feel both thoughtful and human. Before architecture, he spent more than a decade working in film, music, and visual storytelling — experiences that still shape the way he approaches space, light, and emotion. Ryan has worked on everything from schools and civic buildings to homes and medical facilities, but he’s happiest when collaborating closely with people to create places that feel lasting, personal, and deeply considered. He lives on Bainbridge Island with his wife, two kids, two dogs, and at least one overly opinionated guitar.
Becka Liu is an architect, illustrator, plant enthusiast, dog whisperer, violinist and relentless researcher of anything she finds meaningful or inspiring. A graduate of Kansas State University, she previously worked at acclaimed firms including Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Cutler Anderson, where she developed a deep appreciation for thoughtful detailing, craft, and architecture that feels both refined and deeply human. Becka often volunteers at wildlife shelters, K9 rescues, and equine facilities and previously founded a small plant business centered around donating plants to senior communities and care facilities, reflecting her belief that design, beauty, and care should be shared generously. She lives in Hansville with her husband, 2 dogs, and a ball python named Noodle, who contributes very little to the design process.
Together, Ryan and Becka bring contrasting but deeply complementary strengths to Timber and Tone Architects. Ryan tends to lead with conversation, storytelling, and big-picture vision, while Becka approaches projects with methodical rigor, research, and an instinct for thoughtful refinement. Their collaborative process blends creativity with precision, resulting in work that is both expressive and deeply considered.

Chief Kitsap Academy Commons
Chief Kitsap Academy serves approximately 90 students in grades 6th – 12th and provides traditional Suquamish education alongside core curriculums. By offering classes in weaving, carving, salmon harvesting, Lushootseed language and more, this school keeps the spirit of the tribe alive, however they didn’t have a place to gather as an entire group - a core tribal tradition. This modest 3,500 square foot building offers a multi-purpose room with large glass openings, telescoping bleachers, an office, restrooms and storage. The exterior incorporates deep overhangs, amphitheater seating and a council ring (from boulders found on site) to support a variety of different gathering types. The school finally has an event space that can proudly gather their entire student body and staff and sustain their precious traditions.

Eisenhower High School Stadium
The Eisenhower High School campus was built by a district that knew it would be redistricted the following year, so they put as few resources into the campus as possible. Fast forward 60 years - the school is in need of a dramatic upgrade and the students of this underfunded school district in Rialto, California deserve better facilities. Ryan Served as project architect while at Dougherty+Dougherty Architects.

Eisenhower High School Stadium
The stadium and marquee projects serve as an important interface when other schools visit for athletic events. School pride is often manifested through athletic competitions so this has become an important facility for generating a new sense of pride and identity.

The facility is comprised of an IAAF artificial track and field, a 4000 seat home bleacher structure, a 1000 seat visitor bleacher structure, a new home restroom / tickets / concessions building and new visitor ticket / concessions and restroom buildings.

Park Ave Residence
This home in the Wing Point neighborhood of Bainbridge Island was a relatively new home with a beautiful interior but an underwhelming exterior. The street presence was very weak due to a hip roof above the garage and the monolithic horizontal siding.

The owners wanted to give the home a facelift to feel more at home and enhance its street presence to appear more commensurate with the value. We chose a contemporary farmhouse style with a lighter paint color, wood accents, vertical board and batten and new sconces to break up the existing horizontal monotony.

Through an iterative and collaborative process, we found a way to enhance curb appeal, achieve the desired style, and keep construction within a very modest budget. This was a design collaboration with Katie Lesh Design.

With a mission to connect disparate sections of San Francisco that were historically cut off by the former freeway, this design attempts to re-link the community through communal gardens, maker space, and a school that builds skills for a brighter future.

An array of sustainable concepts were implemented in this design, one of which was the control of natural light through intentional wall cladding. Outer spaces were made translucent so light could penetrate deeper into the building, attempting to eliminate blight in the interior corridors.

It lacks the vanity of bright colors or amorphous gestural moves and replaces them with materiality, sustainability and a sense of place.

Design happens at all scales. This wine room seating is inspired by wine barrels, as embodied in the oak slats, burgundy leather backs and metal trim.

Spirituality comes in many forms and not only defines language and culture, it transcends above them. This image served as a primary inspiration for the spiritual omni-denominational place of worship.

Through model making, the structure became what makes the space distinct and unique. It not only controlled the light, but it shaped it, allowing diffused light from the north and controlling harsh direct light from the south.

A spiritual space is a special space. It is a place for reflection and meditation. It is rich in materials and natural elements, but not in vanity and ego. It should be a place that people can be unified through their collective energy and brought closer to their creator, whatever name they may use.

Modeling helps to craft a massing and explore opportunities for connection and disconnection. This project explored many themes, especially the idea of privacy gradient.

Midtown YMCA
This is a dramatic addition to an existing YMCA facility in Wilmington, North Carolina. The existing facility was previously a church activity space, so this addition included full locker rooms, an expanded wellness and weights room, a 25 yard indoor swimming pool and an "airnasium" - an outdoor covered sport court. With Boys and Girls Club components, YMCA components, and church groups using this space, it had to remain flexible and functional. Ryan served as project architect while at LS3P.

The Spine was a collaborative student group project, consisting of 13 studio members, where they were tasked to design and fabricate a seating installation to be located in front of the architecture building. Becka served as a Shop Worker, Financial Manager, and Archivist. The seating configuration went through several iterations before the studio settled on an S-curve, where the design was largely informed by using Grasshopper (3D modeling software) to create the parametric design. The fabrication process involved using over 500 feet of EMT conduit to construct the Spine.

The parametric design was entirely dependent on how the joints came together. Finding a structurally sound and aesthetically pleasing joint was key. The EMT conduit was cut down to individual lengths defined by the Grasshopper script. Once cut, the conduit was crimped using a metal table vice. Each flattened end of pipe was drilled using the drill press and a grinder was used to round the corners.

The pipes were laid out, bent where needed, and assembled with 2" bolts. Using Rhino (3D modeling software) and Grasshopper, the students created a pattern for the seating arrangement. A CNC router was used to draw the pattern onto the fabric with a sharpie. Up to 4 sewing machines were utilized at once to complete the skin. 82 triangles of fabric were cut and sewn together into 4 long strips. They were combined to make 2 long strips that would make up the two sides of the bench. Lastly, the loops that would allow the EMT conduit to slip through and hold the fabric up were created. 27 yards of outdoor fabric and 8 spools of outdoor thread were utilized. The final product was the result of a collaborative design build project. The Spine invites students, faculty, and staff to take a break from work and gather with friends.

This residential study looks at the new needs of what was previously dubbed the "Nuclear Family". The big idea is that 2 families share communal outdoor space and can provide critical support to each other while each navigates the challenges of work, school, after-school care and growing up. The idea is that together we an accomplish more than we can alone.

This exquisite hotel retreat in Ostrobothnia, Finland is a unique solution to "the Nordic flip", the phenomenon that causes long, dark, bitter cold winters and warm, bright summers. Balancing such unique climates requires a unique solution. With nightly accommodations for 84 (68 temporary and 16 permanent residents), the building reclaims the ground area by inviting people to inhabit all roof surfaces, providing hiking and skiing opportunities and unprecedented views of the surrounding islands and ocean. Surrounded by wilderness on 3 sides and water on 1 side, it is accessible by auto and boat and allows for national past-time activities year-round.

A convertible gym area with bleacher seating allows athletic and group activities even in the coldest winter months. A central restaurant lounge provides vast water-front views, and a top-floor lookout room invites meditative activities such as yoga and ceremonies.

This retreat is called LEIKKURI (pronounced LAY-KUR-REE), which is Finnish for "Cutter", as in a boat, usually a single masted vessel, designed to efficiently cut through the waves. Located on the western coast of Finland, this building serves as a beautiful and functional hotel retreat during both summer and winter.

Lynnwood Neighborhood Center
Developed by Volunteers of America, this 35,000 SF, LEED Gold community center represents a compassionate approach to community building. This multi-purpose building graciously exhibits a light-filled central interior courtyard, provides flexible event spaces, 2 different early education programs, Boys and Girls Club, and office spaces for a variety of non-profits and social service programs directed at supporting local families and immigrants seeking a better life. Ryan served as Project Manager and Project Architect during redesign efforts and permitting while at ARC Architects.

Madrona Highlands Apartments
Developed by non-proffite developer Housing Hope, this award-winning 52 unit multi-family complex offers homes of distinction to people escaping homelessness. The facility offers wrap-around support such as counseling, financial management education, food pantry, and childcare services to residents. Most importantly, this complex is anchored around a courtyard that feels protected and cultivates a community of support and togetherness. Ryan served as project architect while at ARC Architects. This project was a partnership between Designs Northwest Architects and ARC Architects. Architect of Record Dan Nelson.

Madrona Highlands Apartments
Part of Housing Hope’s design vision is to incorporate color into the design. The color palettes can be found in nature such as ochre yellow, seafoam blue, mossy green, and rusty orange and vibrant accents were used around the exterior of the 4 building complex. Inside the courtyard, this palette is subdued and complemented by communal patios and exposed stair structures. Ryan served as project architect while at ARC Architects. This project was a partnership between Designs Northwest Architects and ARC Architects. Architect of Record Dan Nelson.

Ben Young Senior Apartments
Situated in the heart of Everett, Washington on the site of an old stone yard, the Ben Young Apartments project is a 140 unit, affordable multi-family senior housing project for Everett Housing Authority (EHA). By combining 3 separate parcels, this 128,000 SF mid-rise project will rehabilitate a tired commercial lot and 2 dilapidated single family residences into an effort to increase the local housing stock and make quality housing more affordable for active seniors. Ryan served as the project architect and project manager while at ARC Architects.

This 5000 sf single family residence boasts 4 beds and 5 baths of classic farmhouse charm on a lovely estate in rural Indiana. Newly constructed, these progress photos show how the house could be designed with modern touches and finishes while maintaining a farmhouse identity. Becka served as project designer while at Kathryn Quinn Architects.
